So how can you get over the possible hurdles and avoid the biggest mistakes house sellers make? Presentation When you have decided to sell your home, it’s wise to think of it as a commodity. If you think sentimentally of the home you have lived in for years, and present it with all the paraphernalia that was part of how you lived in it, it may just deter buyers. They are looking for a blank canvas and want to be able to imagine their lives within the house you are selling. Overpowering decoration, too many bits and pieces and colors which clash are all things that a potential buyer may not be able to see beyond. Some people make the mistake of thinking that as they are selling, it’s not a good idea to spend any more money on the place, though it is worthwhile speculating to accumulate in the case of selling something as big as a house. Try to downsize all that clutter. Pack it in boxes, get it taken away to a storage facility because the lack of clutter makes your home look bigger. Rip out those horrid worn carpets, and take down those curtains your grandmother gave you. They are too showy and really don’t look as good as you thought they did. The blank canvas is created by obliterating pattern and color clashes. Paint over wallpapers, and make the colors blend as you walk through the home. These should be neutral shades of pastel as this depth of color makes the home look bigger and allows the light to be shown at maximal benefit to the interior. Instead of curtains, blinds are great. Instead of floor carpets, click together laminate flooring is stylish, or even polishing up the old floorboards and adding a great rug. Cleanliness A mistake that sellers make is showing off their house before it is ready. A dirty bathroom or kitchen is a complete turn off. Replace the seal around the bath and shower with a nice new white coat. Scrub all the grouting so that the bathroom looks clean. The kitchen which has crowded worktops gives potential buyers the impression that there isn’t enough cupboard space.
